‘Krzyżacy’ (‘Knights of the Cross’): Rock Opera at the Congress Hall
‘Krzyżacy’ – a rock opera based on the classic novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz, will surely be the most surprising music event of the 2010!!!
Prominent Polish actors and vocalists star in the first in long, long years, rock opera made in Poland. This music show created on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, to commemorate Polish victory over the Knights of the Cross, is kept in gloomy, black-and-white rock stylistics.
The action of the story the performance presents takes place at the turn of the 14th and the 15th century. The main threads of the novel are: the romantic relationship (a love triangle, actually…) of Danusia Jurandówna and Zbyszko z Bogdańca, and Jagienka Zychówna who is deeply in love with Zbyszko; a political-historic thread: the conflict of Poles and the Knights of the Cross and the great war with the Knights in 1410; and a story of tragic, dramatic lot of Jurand ze Spychowa.
Contemporary costumes, modern choreography, stylized visual materials, live performance of a rock band. The spectacle, referring in its convention to the classic, world-known and acquainted rock operas, such as ‘Jesus Christ Super Star’ (1973, dir. Norman Jewison) or ‘We Will Rick You’.

‘Krzyżacy’ (‘The Knights of the Cross’) is the best-known novel written by Henryk Sienkiewicz in 1900. A story of romantic love of Zbyszko z Bogdańca and Danuśka, the daughter of Jurand ze Spychowa, presented against very important events of the history of Poland in the 15th century. The culmination of the novel is a wonderful, great Battle of Grunwald, which was an extraordinary triumph of the Polish-Lithuanian army. The book has been translated into 25 languages.
‘Krzyżacy’(‘Black Cross’, 1960), a movie directed by Aleksander Ford, is also one of the most eagerly watched films in the history of Polish cinematography (almost 33 millions of viewers), which is more than the population of Poland counted on the day of the movie’s premiere screening in 1960 (30 million).
‘Krzyżacy’- rock opera is a music story, filled to the brink with passion, suffering, betrayal and heroism, presenting one of the best-known love stories told in Polish literature and one of the most important battles in the history of Poland.
The show is a rich performance, produced with lots of imagination, featuring excellent actors. It is a show which quite possibly may become the most desired music performance in Poland.
