Kapuściński
Announcement of the Jury of the Award for Ryszard Kapuściński's Translators
Ryszard Kapuściński's books have been translated into 39 languages. In the picture – a collection of his translated books in the writer's home.
The Award for Ryszard Kapuściński’s Translators was established in 2015 and is granted every year in two categories: for lifetime achievement and for a translation into a new language.
The Jury of the Award (third edition): Alicja Kapuścińska – the writer’s widow, Vera Verdiani – the first winner of the Award for Translators, Bożena Dudko – secretary of the Jury, Miłada Jędrysik from „Przekrój”, Elżbieta Kalinowska - translator and Jarosław Sroka from Kulczyk Investments – representing the sponsor and patron of the Award for Translators, has decided that:
In the first category, the Award for lifetime achievement in translation
- two equivalent Awards (PLN 10,000 each) will be presented to
Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand and William R. Brand
who, by congenial translations of „Cesarz” (The Emperor) (1983), „Szachinszach” (Shah of Shahs) (1985) and „Jeszcze dzień życia” (Another Day of Life) (1986), contributed to worldwide success of these works and opened the way to translate the books of Kapuściński into other languages.
Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand came up with the idea to translate „Cesarz” (The Emperor) into English on a plane above the Atlantic Ocean in March 1979. She saw the book as a translatable work of over-national potential.
William R. Brand was the first literary agent of Ryszard Kapuściński, he found a publisher for an author unknown outside Poland at that time. He travelled between the United States and Poland, to negotiate and conclude publication contracts during the martial law, when Kapuściński's possibility to leave the country was blocked.
He also translated „Wojna futbolowa” (The Soccer War) (1990), „Spacer poranny” (My Morning Walk) (2009) and „Busz po polsku” (with a title “Nobody Leaves. Impressions of Poland”), which will be published in spring 2017 by Penguin Random House.
In the second category, the Award for a translation into a new language is not presented, because the number of 39 languages into which books of Ryszard Kapuściński are translated did not increase in 2016.
The awards will be presented to Katarzyna Mroczkowska-Brand and William R. Brand on 4 March – on 85th birthday of Ryszard Kapuściński – at Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw. We heartily congratulate Laureates and their Publishers!
