A People. Reportage from Greenland (Lud. Z grenlandzkiej wyspy)
Ilona Wiśniewska

published by Czarne

Three months in Uummannaq
First is Sassuma Arnaa, the Mother of the Sea, whom “one must respect because she gives food”, perhaps that is why in Greenland the most important things are expressed without words. Ilona Wiśniewska’s precise, poetic, anti-pastoral prose manages to capture some of the multi-layered silence of the island. “A People” is a story of people and ice, of animals and landscape, of ancient beliefs and modernity. It also recounts the history of Danish colonialism whose consequences are still felt today. The author does not present her characters as exotic, but neither does she pretend to understand all. She watches, listens, and dreams.
