“Warsaw Autumn”: 56th International Festival of Contemporary Music // 56. Międzynarodowy Festiwal Muzyki Współczesnej “Warszawska Jesień”

The festival is the largest such event of international character in Poland. The project, organized by the Polish Composers' Union (Związek Kompozytorów Polskich), is dedicated to contemporary music. For many years, it was the only festival of contemporary music within the area of Central and Eastern Europe. ”Warsaw Autumn” // ”Warszawska Jesień” has been organized yearly since 1956 (except for 1957 and 1982), in the second half of September, at the National Philharmonic and other concert venues in the Capital City of Warsaw. Ever since its very beginnings, the undertaking has been concentrated on bringing Polish audiences closer to modern western music; it was a way of breaking through the wall of isolation in which Polish artistic circles found themselves during the time of Stalinist dictatorship. The festivals would invariably meet enormous interest, both of music fans and professional critics. The ”Autumns” became a window that allowed people to take a look at the outside world, from which they were separated by the iron curtain. The festivals were a space for meeting of and with creators and observers from the West with composers, performers and critics from East European countries. ”Warsaw Autumn” // ”Warszawska Jesień” played a very important role in the development of Polish composer's school. Nowadays, the project presents Polish audiences with musical classics of the 20th century; it showcases music created world-wide recently, as well as noteworthy Polish compositions. Thanks to ”Warsaw Autumn” // ”Warszawska Jesień”, it has been proven that contemporary music does not have to be hermetic and limited to very strictly defined circles. This success is clearly seen when one looks at the festival's concert venues: always filled or even overflowing with music lovers. It is also worth to mention that among those who decide to take part in this musical feasts, there are a lot of young people, who seek an interesting alternative for present-day popular music.
