From materials supplied by the organiser:

Our exhibition is a story about building museum collections that are created thanks to the passion of museum employees, travellers, collectors. Sometimes "overriding" circumstances are involved, beyond the control of museum employees, such as political reality or "unexpected" donations. Building a museum collection is mainly the effect of scientific research and methods used in a variety of disciplines, from ethnography to anthropology, from amassing objects and adding simple descriptions to in-depth anthropological thinking and interpretation. It is about new ways of seeking items that reflect the changing cultural reality at home and abroad.
The exhibition presents different paths to obtaining the museum's collections: transfers from other museums and depositories, competitions and public campaigns, scientific and artistic collaborations with different institutions, participation in student expeditions, working with folk and amateur artists, purchases and gifts from collectors. Some of the exhibits were obtained during research that the museum's employees conducted in Poland, Europe and faraway regions of Africa, South and Central America, islands in Oceania. We want to show all that is special about setting up and expanding our collections, present the most interesting objects in terms of informative and artistic value, thanks to which the work of the museum's employees and the museum as an institution is multi-faceted in its reach and importance. We hope the exhibition becomes a kind of journey in time and space for visitors. We invite you to take a trip around our collections, to think about ethnographic objects in terms of museum exhibits, their history and image.
