On 23rd May, on the eve – almost – of our celebrations of the 25th anniversary of Polish Freedom and on the occasion of the 5th edition of the Ryszard Kapuściński Award for Literary Reportage, the Patron of the Award, Kulczyk Investments, honoured all of the Award Laureates with “Freedom Pens”, presented to the authors at the Award gala, held at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

Ryszard Kapuściński just loved fountain pens; he owned quite an impressive collection of those. And since he was a very modest person and was known for his practical approach to life, we want our Award to reflect these values. And for this reason, our Patron, Kulczyk Investments, instead of symbolical “Freedom Pens”, funded real Mont Blanc fountain pens for our five laureates. So that they can use these tools to write in defence of freedom and democracy,

Svetlana Alexievich was unable to come to Warsaw and attend the gala. Her “Freedom Pen” was sent to Minsk, where the Belarusian author has been living recently again. On Monday (2nd June), the pen was received by the writer's assistant.

Piotr Śliwowski and Marta Dzido's short films explain why we decided to honour these five authors with our “Freedom Pens”.
